UAE - significant increases in official fees from 29 May 2015

News from good friends Clyde & Co of Cabinet Decision 9 of 2015 which increases official fees for patents, designs, copyright and trade mark transactions. The April 2015 MENA Legal update is not yet on the Clyde & Co website.

The increases in fees are significant. Official fees for trade mark searches, applications, publication, registration and renewal will double. Official fees for a copyright application increase 10 times. Official fees for a patent application increase by 2.5 times.

Official fees will increase:
  • for trade mark search from AED250 (US$70) to AED500 (US$140)
  • for trade mark applications from AED500 (US$140) to AED1,000 (US$280)
  • for trade mark publications from AED500 (US$140) to AED1,000 (US$280)
  • for trade mark registration from AED5,000 (US$1,360) to AED10,000 (US$2,720)
  • for trade mark renewal from AED5,000 (US$1,360) to AED10,000 (US$2,720)
  • for patent filing by a business from AED790 (US$220) to AED2,000 (US$560)
  • for a copyright recordal by a business from AED30 (US$8) to AED300 (US$85)
Official fees for trade mark transactions in the UAE are already some of the highest in the world. These increases are significant.

This part of the Empty Quarter feels that the increases will result in fewer businesses protecting their intellectual property rights in the United Arab Emirates.
